Scam alerts

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has advised that a scam email has been reported which claims to be sent from the myGov Customer Care Team. The email asks people to update their myGov or myGovID details via a link in the email. The link goes to a fake myGov login page designed to steal personal information, including passport and driver’s licence details.

More information about this scam can be found on the ATO Scam Alerts page. If you believe you have received a potential scam email you can report it to ScamWatch.

Grant funding

The Department of Social Services (the department) has received reports that members of the public have been contacted via phone and social media, by an individual or individuals offering government grant funding.

Examples of recent scams

  • Some members of the public have reported the individuals claimed they were from the ‘Department of Social Services’, ‘Australian Grants Commission’ or the ‘Australian Government Grant Department’. Instructions were provided to the member of public on how to access their grant funding, which included paying a fee

These claims are false and these individuals do not represent the Department of Social Services or the Commonwealth.

Departmental officers do not:

  • cold call members of the public to promise grant funding
  • contact members of the public seeking personal information, such as bank details, passport or license numbers.

It is a serious matter to impersonate a Commonwealth public official. It may even be a criminal offence carrying a penalty of imprisonment in some circumstances.

What to do if approached or if you need assistance

If you are concerned that a phone call, SMS, voicemail or email claiming to be from the ATO, the Community Grants Hub or the Department of Social Services is not genuine, please do not reply to it. We encourage you to report incidents of this nature by:

  • visiting Scamwatch to report to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
  • contacting the Department of Social Services’ fraud reporting hotline on 1800 054 312
  • contacting the ATO on 1800 008 540.

If you have already provided information or are concerned that a crime has or may be committed, please immediately contact the police, your bank or the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) if it relates to your passport details.
