Before you submit

The Department of Social Services (the Department, we, us, our) collects personal information, including sensitive information, about individuals for a range of purposes to enable it to carry out its functions. 

What is ‘personal information’ and ‘sensitive information’?

Your ‘personal information’ is protected by law, including under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Privacy Act). Personal information is information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable. 

‘Sensitive information’ is a subset of personal information and can include information or an opinion about a person’s health or genetic information, racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs, and membership of trade unions or associations. 

Why we collect your personal information

We collect information for the purposes of providing support for grants, the Data Exchange and the Grant Recipient Portal. We request that you only disclose personal information that is being solicited. 

Through this online contact form, the Department will collect personal information about you to assist in the effective management of your enquiry as well as for training purposes. Our Privacy Policy has been prepared in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles and contains information about how you can access and correct personal information held by the Department about you. 

What we collect

The personal information which will be collected through the online contact form include the following:

  • Name

  • Email

  • Phone number

  • Organisation name.

Who we disclose your personal information to 

Personal information collected through the online contact form will be disclosed to relevant staff members of the Department, involved in the processing and progression of external enquiries.

We may also disclose your personal (and sensitive information) to the following people, organisations or third parties: 

  • Our ICT Contracted Service Provider, for the purposes of assisting the Department with information technology services; 

  • Other parties where the disclosure is required or authorised by law. 

Storage

Storage of your personal information (and the disposal of information when it is no longer required) is managed in accordance with the Australian Government records management regime, including the Archives Act 1983 (Cth), agency-specific records authorities, and general records authorities. This ensures your personal information is held securely by the Department.
