The Australian Government is inviting organisations via a targeted competitive process to apply to deliver legal advice services under Program 1.4 Justice Services in 2021–22 and 2022–23.

The legal advice service provides legal advice and information to members of the public engaging with the Royal Commission. The legal advice service seeks to assist Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel and veterans, and their families, carers and supporters to access and engage with the Royal Commission. It will be an independent, trauma-informed, culturally safe and accessible service that will be delivered nationally. The legal advice service will enable people to understand their legal rights and options in engaging with the Royal Commission.

The legal advice service will provide referral to counselling and other support services to ensure a holistic and cooperative approach to assisting people to engage with the Royal Commission. The legal advice service will not require the individual to be a formal witness of the Royal Commission.

The express outcome of the grant opportunity is the provision of a free legal advice service that will be national, experienced, accessible and culturally appropriate, with established governance and the ability to create referrals and work closely with the Royal Commission.

The service will run for the duration of the Royal Commission.
